The bright colours and variety of shapes of fruit lend themselves perfectly to painting in pastel. We will explore techniques including blocking in and layering on the way to you producing your own still life.

This one day workshop will introduce you to the versatile medium of pastel. Not having to wait for paint to dry or mix colours gives you plenty of time to enjoy this session.

During the demonstration you will receive both group and individual guidance and shown how using colour and contrast can reveal shape and attract the eye to the focal point of your subject. At the end of the day you will have your own small painting to take home.

Materials are not included in your course fee.

Three sheets of pastelmat (pre-coloured surface you will be using) will be provided by the tutor at a cost of £5...more will be available to buy should you need it.

Please bring with you:

  • Please bring a good selection of soft pastels and a pale pastel pencil - the tutor will have some pastels for sale if required but will not carry a large range
  • Small brush – 1cm approx. (To brush away excess pastel)
  • Apron
  • Kitchen towel
  • Wet wipes
  • Putty rubber
  • Small cotton cloth (to wipe hands)
  • Masking Tape

Tutor Profile

Clive lives and works in Newbury, Berkshire. Self-taught and a professional artist for the past 16 years, he enjoys painting a wide range of subjects using pastel almost exclusively. 

He rarely holds demonstrations and workshops due to his commission commitments so we're honoured he's teaching for us. His method of pastel application and final result both surprises and enthuses his students leading them to go on and explore the fun of this fantastic medium.

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Complimentary fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon. SPECIAL DIETS - Lunch: We can cater for vegetarians. If you have other special dietary needs/preferences, please bring your own sandwiches. Teatime: If you would like gluten/dairy free cake, just let us know when you arrive.
