Learn about the basic different typographic families and their defining characteristics; for example serifs and sans serifs, italics and scripts. Experiment with playing with letters and how they can be linked together to create unique designs. See how simple embellishments can be added to enhance a design.
You will design an alphabet sampler and then work on a final piece, which could be a greetings card for a specific person, a saying, a company name…the choice is yours. A wide selection of resources will be available for inspiration.

- creating simple but effective typographic layouts, from initial ideas to final piece
A class for anyone who enjoys doodling, from absolute beginner to expert doodler.
Materials are not included in your course fee. The approximate cost of these will be £3, payable to the tutor during the course. The tutor will provide a variety of paper stock, but if you would like to bring your own papers, please do.
We do not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.
Please bring with you:
- A3 layout pad – the graphic designer’s preferred paper as it is transparent and perfect for developing designs
- a variety of different sized black felt tipped pens – from very fine to thick (NOT chisel pointed or calligraphic)
- HB or softer pencil
- soft eraser
- pencil sharpener
- a folder or envelope for taking your work home
- ideas of a word, phrase or saying that you would like to produce in graphic lettering
The tutor will provide coloured papers for the finished pieces.

Christine is an inspiring tutor with a wealth of teaching and design experience and a holistic approach to creativity. Her unique creative profile includes 12 years as a graphic designer at the BBC and being Head of Film and Animation at Kingston University, author of ‘Contemporary Needlepoint’ and Kodak’s Young Photographer of the year (some time ago!). She has also won a clutch of international awards and been nominated for a BAFTA. Her textiles have been shown at the Contemporary Textiles Gallery in London and her graphic work has been published in various journals and books. As a freelancer, she has made 80 velvet scarves for ‘Mary Poppins’ on Broadway NY and even filmed a funeral for the Queen. She is passionate about lettering in all its many forms and enjoys sharing her enthusiasm with her students. With her appearance on the BBC's Make!
