With the wonderful medium of pastel, we will experiment with the rich colours and cover techniques required to give opaque pastel the look of glass

Painting an image containing glass can seem a daunting challenge. In this workshop you will be shown how to create the illusion of transparency with just a few light marks of pastel.

Clive will work on his own piece during the session so students can observe the process of development using this versatile and accessible medium, whilst offering guidance along the way.

Materials are not included in your course fee.

Three sheets of pastelmat (pre-coloured surface you will be using) will be provided by the tutor at a cost of £5...more will be available to buy should you need it.

Please bring with you:

  • Please bring a good selection of soft pastels and a pale pastel pencil - the tutor will have some pastels for sale if required but will not carry a large range
  • Small brush – 1cm approx. (To brush away excess pastel)
  • Apron
  • Kitchen towel
  • Wet wipes
  • Putty rubber
  • Small cotton cloth (to wipe hands)
  • Masking Tape

Tutor Profile

Clive lives and works in Newbury, Berkshire. Self-taught and a professional artist for the past 16 years, he enjoys painting a wide range of subjects using pastel almost exclusively. 

He rarely holds demonstrations and workshops due to his commission commitments so we're honoured he's teaching for us. His method of pastel application and final result both surprises and enthuses his students leading them to go on and explore the fun of this fantastic medium.

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Complimentary fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon. SPECIAL DIETS - Lunch: We can cater for vegetarians. If you have other special dietary needs/preferences, please bring your own sandwiches. Teatime: If you would like gluten/dairy free cake, just let us know when you arrive.
