Owls silhouetted against moons or in mid-flight hovering above cornfields or the spires of Oxford....join Denny Webb with this highly creative one day workshop where the student will be introduced to the concept of chiaroscuro, the extreme use of light and dark by painting beautiful monochrome owls in watercolour, black ink and gold powder.

This workshop is ideal for the beginner watercolourist as well as improvers as we will be investigating the power of tonal painting, Denny will give step by step instructions and numerous demonstrations to support the learning process.

We will start the day with drawing a black and white Nōtan using a black marker pen to discover the extreme lights and darks in our subject and then we will paint a monochrome of our owl either on a perch or in flight in front of a moon in watercolour and black ink with gold powder blown into the wash.

This course is designed for a range of abilities including beginners


We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.


Please bring with you:

A number of images of owls perched on posts or in flight in a night’ s sky,

Pencils, eraser, sketch book,

Plenty of cold pressed 140lb watercolour paper (no smaller than 10 x 14 inches),

Variety of watercolour brushes

Indigo watercolour paint (Windsor & Newton’s artist grade tube paint is preferred),

Black acrylic ink (FW Rowney is a good brand),

Schminke aqua bronze powder in rich gold (can be bought on the internet at Jacksons, Amazon and the SAA)

Chisel nib sharpie marker pen and black felt tip pen

Pen Masking Fluid

Masking tape

Tracing paper with tracedown paper (carbon paper)

Small diamond pallet knife



Tutor Profile

Denny has worked and studied in the U.S.A. where she has established a large client base and won numerous awards in national shows.

She has paintings in private collections in America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the U.K. she is also a member of the prestigious Oxford Art Society.

Denny’s paintings can be seen in the Stone Gallery in Burford, the White gallery in Ashburton, the Obsidian gallery in Stoke Mandeville, the gallery in Wallingford and numerous others, she also shows at the Windsor and Reading Contemporary Art fairs. You can see her work on

Timings & Refreshments

Please aim to arrive between 9.30 and 9.45am to allow for a 10am start. Fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with homemade cookies in the morning, a complimentary sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon.
