Overlockers are incredibly useful for edging, hemming or seaming, but can be infuriating. Don’t let yours get the better of you. Spend a day learning everything from the secrets of re-threading to roll hemming and stabilising seams. Discover how to get the best results from your overlocker. Learn from May Martin, former judge on the Great British Sewing Bee (BBC2)and a seamstress with more than 40 years' experience.

Overlockers are very technical and challenging pieces of equipment and many hours can be wasted re-threading. The mechanics of the overlocker will be explained so that you understand how it works. Notes will be given at every stage to help you learn and remember how the many techniques are achieved.

This course is designed for a range of abilities, including beginners.


Materials are not included in your course fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £10.

Please note that we do not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

Please bring with you:

  • your overlocker and handbook. The overlocker must be in good working order with all the kit that came with the machine when purchased
  • scissors, pins, needle and tape measure
  • overlocker thread or large reels of thread
  • note pad and pen
  • an A4 folder with clear wallets for your worksheets and samples

Tutor Profile

May Martin is a qualified teacher with 40 years’ experience. She draws from and builds on traditional skills, which she constantly extends and updates. Her career has held tremendous variety from running a needlework department and undertaking commissions for textile refurbishment of houses, to giving talks, demonstrations, teaching and most recently, being a judge on the Great British Sewing Bee (BBC 2). May has a real passion for her subject and enjoys providing instruction and inspiration to stitchers at every level. 

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon.
